From Cork to Liverpool .. Cargoes

Cargoes

by John Masefield

Quinquireme of Nineveh from distant Ophir,
Rowing home to haven in sunny Palestine,
With a cargo of ivory,
And apes and peacocks,
Sandalwood, cedarwood, and sweet white wine.

Stately Spanish galleon coming from the Isthmus,
Dipping through the Tropics by the palm-green shores,
With a cargo of diamonds,
Emeralds, amythysts,
Topazes, and cinnamon, and gold moidores.

Dirty British coaster with a salt-caked smoke stack,
Butting through the Channel in the mad March days,
With a cargo of Tyne coal,
Road-rails, pig-lead,
Firewood, iron-ware, and cheap tin trays.

Gordon and Justin and anyone else more than welcome to come to Liverpool.
After the prize giving at the Hall.. There is a plan to go for a few pints in the Pilgrim Pub ( nr the dock). Maybe get a bite to eat after the prize giving as the kids will be hungry .. then go to the pub.
I beleive the Tv series has started ,, and that Qingdao clipper is in the Times and the Ft now and again .. always knew I should be in those!!

As for this race .. it s been fantastic .. we've had little wind , too much wind , gale force wind.. use all the white sails and the kites .. its been cold & today the sun comes out, the sea is a charcoal green. This trip has been a joy working the watch hard with some great results always looking after each other .. a great feeling.

All i need now is a chisel to get my clothes off ..yes they've been on since Sydney ..leggings the lots .. and yes I can smell myself ... get me to a bath.

It has been an interesting sail the past 48 hours,we have been in 1st & then lost some ground to Hull,Jam &NY.We got caught in some heavy winds thus leading us to do sail changes, reefs which ended up dropping the yankee as the winds reached upto 37ktS.You can sometimes have too much wind. Now after some very slick sail changes one done by my watch,a great team performance we have worked hard in getting our lead back.Last night we saw the stars, the weather has warmed a little and we are in the North Atloantic current/the Gulf stream
NY are on our port quarter,we are working hard.We have 1020nm to go until that pint of stout, the watch's are working very well, everyone is having fun & enjoying the sail.Yesterday Hen turned 19( bless her)
So all good on the Lady Qing
p.s check the web site to see where you can see us on TV,they are showing it around the world now

Mercury,Steel,Iron,Gun Metal,Charcoal and Silver describe the colours of the ocean this afternoon. It is tranquil out here surrounded with puffy clouds in the distant, the dolphin swaying along ,the whale stretching its spine through the still waters, the birds playfuly darting around.. it is wonderful.

The Fog come and goes, when it is in it is very weiry, the visablity is nothing, all eyes are peeled and ears pm tender hooks seeking out any noise. We have seen a couple of fishing boats and the odd cargo vessel. We have a godd feeling they can see us on their radar.
Currently we are over the Grand banks of Newfoundland rich in fish and wild life.Last night the sky was crystal blue ,the stars so clear one could only deam of what was out there. This place is pure with the soul is drawing it all in.

The Last Ocean .. the North Atlantic

Sydney Canada   ; location The safe haven of the Delta Hotel     Condition , chilly outside buut warm in the Bar

We ve had our crew brief for tommorrow and I m mentaly ready for the cold, the hard work it will take to get us to Ireland.I ve felt quite emmotional lately , I looked at my globe and  it just registered how far we have been in the last nine months .... it puts a lump in my throat that we have come so far.Marcus and his merry men have chatted, worked hard and learnt so much ,not just about sailing but dealing with fears ,  the cold and all the other stuff you can imagine. We have a great crew, a great skipper and I have great memeoires of it all.

At the begining of this journey which started with a call from Hong Kong to David Cushworth with me excitied about joining and being worried about not getting a place on board The 'fear' set in .. The Fear of ' Will I be strong enough' ....The Fear of ' How is the skipper'..... The Fear of ' I m out of my saftey net , how will I cope' .......The Fear of not wanting to fail others ' ... The Fear of will I be strong enough ' .. the Fear of the ocean'( remember I ve only sailed for 12 days prior to this )

But the real fear that I had and this is by far the greatest.. the fear of Not finishing the journey ..of not making it through.. when I m honest when I spoke to David Cusworth the real fear was starting something and not finishing , the weather may be bad , the ocean may be angry , but as a team .. no not a team .. a family on board the Lady Qing we have grown and I know we have all made our fears a little smaller and we will come away from this a stronger family .. something no one will ever be able to take away from us.Seeing Ant have large waves over him whilst helming out of Durban takes guts, Christians helping hand and alway eager to do the right thing, Nicole who has just grown stronger on every leg and takes on the waves of these ocean showing no fear, Chris on the other watch who is always there ,and the Boy wonder Ocsar who shows no fear and is alway smiling ... I m glad to be taking this last part of the journey with them .. we started together and will return together closer than we realise . Slam and Glam will be the watch names as we started this adventure .. fear will be our friend reminding us to be aware and safe .... sleep is just 14days away .. and we have the rest of our lives to catch up on that..
Yes this will be an emmotion journey home.

GOOD BYE HALIFAX
A short but sweet stop over , got some good rest in the Westihotel which one needed after the great hospitality of the locals on the first night , so yesterday got about 13 hours in my pit , off and on sleep ...which was after the fresh air tour of Halifax and their Citadel, Marcus,Mole,Dan,Nicole,Myself and Oscar went , Oscar dressed up in Highland Army outfit and marched us about ..all very comical.
A cleansing ale and then sleep at 4 pm .. all very nice.
So now we are on our way to Sydney Canada 200 miles away , in a non clipper race the D250.. We are taking it nice and easy resting our sails before the big one across the pond.
We have guestsTony and Holy on board both locals and it will be great for Tony who is on my watch to go back to his home town of Sydney by sail. Both loevly people and proud of their roots.

Weather ; sunny , fresh /chilly - cold - very cold later on .. sea state pleasant ; one reef , yankee 2

Podium.. and a hard one to earn .. with a dog fight against Hull and Humber

It was a hard 12 hours we were 1st, then 2nd and then third .. with wind shifts we dropped back , we hoisted the wind seeker and I guess others hoisted their kites .. with the wind shifting a 360 we had hard time to steer the Lady, but once we hoisted the spinnaker we were focused to fight back , and that we did.It was very close between H/H they were infront and as the boats merged they had the upper hand .. they were infront again.. but with determination, some great team work .. we helmed and trimmed like always ..But this time we got the result we deserved , we had H/H just feet on our stern.. it was tense.. it was nail bitting .. it was close quaters ocean racing at its best ...
Danny unlucky but the best boat did beat you.
We done Team Qingdao and the Lady Qing

The Le Mans Start was interesting in very light wind with all clippers hunting for a breeze ... never mind the direction just get some boat speed was the moto... the first 24hrs light winds in Fog and now the past 12 hrs we have had a constant speed of 10kts..as for positions it will be all so close .. we have clipppers all around us and it will come down to a fast sail change and helming... we have just dropped to the yankee 2 as the wind has picked up ... so we were woken up early for this ..it will be a long night ahead of us.

New York
A brief stop over, infact far too short but still time to have a stroll around & pick up the great vibe. The city seems cleaner than when I was last here, the park a joy to relax in.Got a Limo to the Yankees stadium, however the game was sold out so went to a local bar had a few cold ones & enjoyed the atmosphere of the locals. With that done headed to the village for a late dinnner & back to the boat where the clouds let loose a very cold sprinkle of rain.
Will have to head back as the city needs more time for strolling, checking out the bars/resturants,and people watching.

At present making our way to the start of the race , some fog surrounds us so I think we may motor a little further and get out of the traffic zone.

Lightning gone ;48 miles to Ambrose then 25 down the river.
39 41.1 N 073 59.0 W boat time 16.00 gmt 20.00

We have been trucking on nicely with sails and engine and after last nights storm the skies are blue and the sun warms our hearts again. We have passed a few container ships, the odd fishing boat and a cruise liner.

So nearly there, we will get in around midnight and have to wait for some other clippers to catch up and dock before us.We have been told the plans for the next couple of days and the crew is a little unhappy. We have immigration tomorrow between 11.30 and 12.30 .. prize giving at 18.00 hrs and then Tuesday have to take some people out on the boat for 11.00 , slap bang in the middle of the day .. wednesday we leave early doors.. so i m guessing we wont be spending much green back in the big apple... a shame

Next a sprint to Canada .. should take just three days.
