Liverpool

What a welcome,it was fantastic to see so many there especially as the rains had come & gone.We gave Marcus a champers shower ,drank beers ,caught up with mums/dads, felt exhausted...went to the prize giving..what a saturday to remember.

But as on the Lady Qing we have to do things our way & up grade the proceedings,so it was planned to meet in the Champagne Bar of the Pan Am on Sunday &Champers we drunk. It was great to meet the Mums/ Dads of our crew..as we all know on board the Lady that you guys at home are part of our crew ..but with joy comes sadness, for we all knew in our hearts it was time to say good bye.. as I write I have a tear ..yes .. but not of sad memories but of the fun,the joyful occasions,Oscar always happy,The ripping of the Weshman Ant ..and more.
As I looked around the room I felt proud to have sailed, hung out with you all & that you guys made this a wonderful journey for me.
I sit here I have so many words I want to say,but hey where does one start & how can I find the right words.
As we have just left Liverpool, it was also time to say good bye to friends made on other boats,Liverpool Clipper being close to the Lady Qing & waving to those on the dock was hard.. I hope we meet again.
Jessop.Gary@gmail.com

I will ramble on more later ... but for now .. I m going to close my eyes and think of a fun place ..Hawaii.

From Cork to Liverpool .. Cargoes

Cargoes

by John Masefield

Quinquireme of Nineveh from distant Ophir,
Rowing home to haven in sunny Palestine,
With a cargo of ivory,
And apes and peacocks,
Sandalwood, cedarwood, and sweet white wine.

Stately Spanish galleon coming from the Isthmus,
Dipping through the Tropics by the palm-green shores,
With a cargo of diamonds,
Emeralds, amythysts,
Topazes, and cinnamon, and gold moidores.

Dirty British coaster with a salt-caked smoke stack,
Butting through the Channel in the mad March days,
With a cargo of Tyne coal,
Road-rails, pig-lead,
Firewood, iron-ware, and cheap tin trays.

It has been an interesting sail the past 48 hours,we have been in 1st & then lost some ground to Hull,Jam &NY.We got caught in some heavy winds thus leading us to do sail changes, reefs which ended up dropping the yankee as the winds reached upto 37ktS.You can sometimes have too much wind. Now after some very slick sail changes one done by my watch,a great team performance we have worked hard in getting our lead back.Last night we saw the stars, the weather has warmed a little and we are in the North Atloantic current/the Gulf stream
NY are on our port quarter,we are working hard.We have 1020nm to go until that pint of stout, the watch's are working very well, everyone is having fun & enjoying the sail.Yesterday Hen turned 19( bless her)
So all good on the Lady Qing
p.s check the web site to see where you can see us on TV,they are showing it around the world now

Mercury,Steel,Iron,Gun Metal,Charcoal and Silver describe the colours of the ocean this afternoon. It is tranquil out here surrounded with puffy clouds in the distant, the dolphin swaying along ,the whale stretching its spine through the still waters, the birds playfuly darting around.. it is wonderful.

The Fog come and goes, when it is in it is very weiry, the visablity is nothing, all eyes are peeled and ears pm tender hooks seeking out any noise. We have seen a couple of fishing boats and the odd cargo vessel. We have a godd feeling they can see us on their radar.
Currently we are over the Grand banks of Newfoundland rich in fish and wild life.Last night the sky was crystal blue ,the stars so clear one could only deam of what was out there. This place is pure with the soul is drawing it all in.

The Last Ocean .. the North Atlantic

Sydney Canada   ; location The safe haven of the Delta Hotel     Condition , chilly outside buut warm in the Bar

We ve had our crew brief for tommorrow and I m mentaly ready for the cold, the hard work it will take to get us to Ireland.I ve felt quite emmotional lately , I looked at my globe and  it just registered how far we have been in the last nine months .... it puts a lump in my throat that we have come so far.Marcus and his merry men have chatted, worked hard and learnt so much ,not just about sailing but dealing with fears ,  the cold and all the other stuff you can imagine. We have a great crew, a great skipper and I have great memeoires of it all.

At the begining of this journey which started with a call from Hong Kong to David Cushworth with me excitied about joining and being worried about not getting a place on board The 'fear' set in .. The Fear of ' Will I be strong enough' ....The Fear of ' How is the skipper'..... The Fear of ' I m out of my saftey net , how will I cope' .......The Fear of not wanting to fail others ' ... The Fear of will I be strong enough ' .. the Fear of the ocean'( remember I ve only sailed for 12 days prior to this )

But the real fear that I had and this is by far the greatest.. the fear of Not finishing the journey ..of not making it through.. when I m honest when I spoke to David Cusworth the real fear was starting something and not finishing , the weather may be bad , the ocean may be angry , but as a team .. no not a team .. a family on board the Lady Qing we have grown and I know we have all made our fears a little smaller and we will come away from this a stronger family .. something no one will ever be able to take away from us.Seeing Ant have large waves over him whilst helming out of Durban takes guts, Christians helping hand and alway eager to do the right thing, Nicole who has just grown stronger on every leg and takes on the waves of these ocean showing no fear, Chris on the other watch who is always there ,and the Boy wonder Ocsar who shows no fear and is alway smiling ... I m glad to be taking this last part of the journey with them .. we started together and will return together closer than we realise . Slam and Glam will be the watch names as we started this adventure .. fear will be our friend reminding us to be aware and safe .... sleep is just 14days away .. and we have the rest of our lives to catch up on that..
Yes this will be an emmotion journey home.

GOOD BYE HALIFAX
A short but sweet stop over , got some good rest in the Westihotel which one needed after the great hospitality of the locals on the first night , so yesterday got about 13 hours in my pit , off and on sleep ...which was after the fresh air tour of Halifax and their Citadel, Marcus,Mole,Dan,Nicole,Myself and Oscar went , Oscar dressed up in Highland Army outfit and marched us about ..all very comical.
A cleansing ale and then sleep at 4 pm .. all very nice.

Podium.. and a hard one to earn .. with a dog fight against Hull and Humber

It was a hard 12 hours we were 1st, then 2nd and then third .. with wind shifts we dropped back , we hoisted the wind seeker and I guess others hoisted their kites .. with the wind shifting a 360 we had hard time to steer the Lady, but once we hoisted the spinnaker we were focused to fight back , and that we did.It was very close between H/H they were infront and as the boats merged they had the upper hand .. they were infront again.. but with determination, some great team work .. we helmed and trimmed like always ..But this time we got the result we deserved , we had H/H just feet on our stern.. it was tense.. it was nail bitting .. it was close quaters ocean racing at its best ...
Danny unlucky but the best boat did beat you.

New York
A brief stop over, infact far too short but still time to have a stroll around & pick up the great vibe. The city seems cleaner than when I was last here, the park a joy to relax in.Got a Limo to the Yankees stadium, however the game was sold out so went to a local bar had a few cold ones & enjoyed the atmosphere of the locals. With that done headed to the village for a late dinnner & back to the boat where the clouds let loose a very cold sprinkle of rain.
Will have to head back as the city needs more time for strolling, checking out the bars/resturants,and people watching.

At present making our way to the start of the race , some fog surrounds us so I think we may motor a little further and get out of the traffic zone.

We have been trucking on nicely with sails and engine and after last nights storm the skies are blue and the sun warms our hearts again. We have passed a few container ships, the odd fishing boat and a cruise liner.

So nearly there, we will get in around midnight and have to wait for some other clippers to catch up and dock before us.We have been told the plans for the next couple of days and the crew is a little unhappy. We have immigration tomorrow between 11.30 and 12.30 .. prize giving at 18.00 hrs and then Tuesday have to take some people out on the boat for 11.00 , slap bang in the middle of the day .. wednesday we leave early doors.. so i m guessing we wont be spending much green back in the big apple... a shame

Next a sprint to Canada .. should take just three days.

Summary 4th
We had a great le Mans start , after the last one this was real Ninja stuff, and we lead the race for a few days. The evolutions by the crew cracking, nailing them all ..we just want to get even faster. The wind died and we wavered a little. We then gave the ball to th oppo and let them run in an easy try not worthy of the points;Letting W.A come around us.We were then fighting for a podium rather than 1st place.
Of all the races so far this is the most gutting.

As expected listening to the radio we can hear some skippers bleating about the race being called early .. but funnily enough they were the skippers who were bleating that there was no wind and it should stop.

We now have the boat ship shape , the yankee 2 poled out and sailing towards NYC our VMG is 12.1 so hopefully make it by sunday night.I beleive customs will be at the dock Monday at 11ish.. So some time will be spent in the local Bar.

Well done to New York , what a great result to come 1st in your home port.

As for us we will keep nailing the evolutions/the races and hope that Lady luck plays her hand.

Have a nice day now !!

30/5/08 31 34.2 N 075 07.0 W NEWS FLASH;

Just heard the race will finish early ..Tonight at midight GMT.
This has come out of the blue for Marcus , he didnt expect this and beleived the race would go to the end, this is ocean racing and we planned to race to the Ambrose Light house , with just 536 miles to go and a feeling that the wind is picking up we are gutted for this call.
As I said before we will have time enough on Land in the near future and New York is a easy place to fly to.

But we also have to remember that the race commitee have goals to meet and to keep sponsors happy etc,so timing is always at the back of their minds. And I m sure some of the other skippers try and put their two penneth in.It must be a tough call for Joff and his team.

As I write we have 6kts of wind and are now on the heels of W.A who passed us in the night with some lucky gust of wind.

So now my mother watch has finished , rice salad , pasta and porridge all done and dusted its back to the top side to try and take back some miles.

Enjoy the Drama

We should know by now not to get excited by a good breeze and working out that we would be in NY early was a school boy error but hey when your in the lead you start to work out the VMG rates and time of arrival,we always have the conversation and good to see it on the Jet watch .. if VMG IS 10kts then we get to NY on .... if it is 11kts and naturally we work up the impossible scale to 15 kts etc .. And what happens, over night we enter a wind hole and have zero kts,the time of arrival in NY is October2010 ... just in time for the next clipper race.
But good news for all our supporters ,,The Lady Qing and crew are use to these conditions and we take the time to relish where we are, some other skippers sound frustrated and stressed, here on the Lady we certainly are not,we will get to the Big Apple as and when.I hope Joff isn't stressing too much at race Hq because I love the ocean , the pure air the sunsets/sunrise and just being out here. All I know is land will come and before we know it this will be a distant memory .. so I say lets take our time, relax and enjoy ..If we get a gust of wind which transports us to a podium that would be a great reward for all the sailors of all legs on the Lady and our patience and hard work.
Presently 3rd with a calm soul

Good bye to Jules,Debs,Austin,Steve,Cal
What fun we had sailing ,, coming 4th and 2nd .. some good sailing and some luck ..all with the great ingredient of chat.. jules was non stop ... by the way did any of you pick up my Qingdoa polo with panama flag badge and christians slam shorts.
Last Leg :1st race we go West Side Story
SHARKS:Chris,Oscar,Emma,Hen,John,Mole
JETS:Myself,Christian,Nicole,Ant,Abi,Dan .... when you're a Jet ..
We had a good race around the cans out of Jamaica ..and a great start on the Le Mans start .. the wind favoured The Badgers 'Wing it call' and off we went with a pinch and a tuck here and there and after some great but very tiring evolutions with not much sleep for the Jets we find ourselves in 1st place. But the heat is on .. go on hum it ... and the pack of hounds are on our tail.. so it will be a very tight race .. we are not use to seeing other Clippers ,so this is a first for us.. how will we take the pressure .in our stride .. bring it on
The sun rise and sunsets have be fantastic .. the blues /greys .. the stars lighting our way and the Gaurdian Orion always reminding us of saftey and what we are doing .. a joy to be alive and a joy to be spending it with a great crew as always

Special Spectators
On the way to crossing the line it was as though nature had come to celebrate our podium position. We were first met by flocks of Gulls applauding from the gallery, swooping our sails.Next an army of dolphins(500+) dancing towards the Lady,a most amazing sight as we all sat on the rail for the extra knot.Lucky Marcus had the video camera & took some great footage of this spectacler.
Early a.m whales flipping fish by their tail.
Awesome x

80 to go... this is very tight 12 53.6N 100 36.6 W
As predicted the race will finish early, the call has been given that we finish at the 2nd gate, the wind has been light with a few gusts,so loads of trimming/helming concentration with big coms. There are 5 up for a 'P'finish,H&H,GLAS,NY,NS & The Lady herself. It is so tight all it takes is a gust here or there,or black cloud to suck away the wind, anything at present is possible.
Yesterday we celebrated Cals b'day with Champers & Rum and Coke. With that booster we took back 5 nm on NS which they took on on us over night, and have now extended that by 3.5nm lead. This was done by some very quick evolutions from the wind seeker to the yankee, they were caught napping & we reacted very well to the conditions, maybe a small victory at the time, but the whole crew deserved it for the slickness. We have been watching their lights all night in case we have to cover tack.
Everyone is feeling the pressure in a good way, loads of encouragement by all, some great helming & as ever trim trim.
Now we have to wait to see how Lady Luck plays her hand to us.

We have been plagued with lightwinds since day 2 of the race, can t beleive it really thought we were going to have 15 kts all the way.On a good note all our kites are looking good from the repairs made in Hawaii & the boat is nice & dry
The only wind we seem to have bellowing at present comes after Nicole made a veggy soup/stew last night.Spirits are high, all enjoying the moment

Another good start for the Lady Qing & as we pondered with Hull which way to go we were joined by 50 plus dolphins dancing their way around our bow. The wind was pleasant & fresh, the spirits high.
We had said our good byes to fellow seamen leaving the Lady Q;Neil the ledge surfer,Pete Tong,Teddy..all great fun sailing with & plenty of chat.
The skys have been peaceful above us,no clouds, bright blues, the evenings & dawns a dream to be in with their rich colours of golds, silvers, purples & deep reds. The moon & the sun join our party at 5.30.. it is a joy to be on this watch at this hour.
So far we have had the kites flying nicely with some tidy evolutions,as for our position I' m guessing mid place as we havent received the sched information on a regular basis..but the place doesn't matter for the moment, just being here in perfect sailing conditions is a treat to savour after the hard sails of the last 2 legs.
The watch's are called Rum & Coke,Chris & I are still in the hot seat of these.I must say I m enjoying it & who wouldn't with a crew like ours on the Lady Qing(with plenty of chat).

Still a long way to go for us & remember that's in a straight line,we may have to tack north again & lose some vmg.. we hope to make it by friday but I'm 50/50 on that maybe saturday. So we have had a bad run, the facts; 3 last places out the last 4 races. You hear me say we have a good team & our sail changes and helming are very good & I still stand by that, the leggers coming on for the last 2 legs have a lot to step up to & I'm sure they will. And I wouldnt change the team for anything ,entertaining chat, a skipper that when it gets tough steps up and we have had few hair raising moments and all the challenges that come with a journey like this from high winds to no winds to coming last to being in a podium position. The emmotions of fear/joy/laughter and sadness are all part of the recipe.
Bring on the next leg...the ocean is a wonderful place for the soul

And the wind comes
We had no wind & prayed for wind and it came, a little late but it came alright. In the last few hours we have been flying the wind seeker(ideal for very light airs/basiclly no wind). Then we got excited & changed to yankee1,within minutes we had to drop reef and hoist the yankee 2 as the wind started to build, again within minutes we had to reef again drop the yankee2 and hoist the yankee 3.. wait for it ...... yep then within minutes again the wind was at 35kts,we had to drop the yankee 3 and go alone on stay sail and main with 2 reefs. All on my watch, however Chris's watch did come and help, a great team perfomance was had by all .
So feeling pretty tired hanking on and off the sails/hoisting and all, but a great feeling to get under power again and on our way.

Very frustrating here at sea,one can never imagine having no wind espcially in the Pacific...and now I know why pacific means peacful.Every ripple we see on the ocean we hope that it is a sign the wind is coming,we have clouds around us, however no puff.

We are lucky to have the 'chat' though & that keeps us going
Everyone frustrated, but then again this is part of it

It s all close at present ,we were 4th and have now dropped back to 5th, it looks like the other boats have been able to do a nm faster than us an hour hence they have all made 6miles on us.The wind has eased with us,nothing has broken we now have the yankee 1up / no reefs and need a little help from Hermes.
Everyone is Helmng well and the chat is still good .Christain is on top form and Chris's curry was a hit last night.Today I find myself on mother, so it's noodle and pasta from the day bag.. no messing today.
Pete ninja Leung has been up the mast aswell as his fingers non stop in the cookie jar, Kenny (from south park (Nicole)still squeeking so all good.Emma still not too well,Cal and Neil all good with Oscar as ever smiling..so indeed a joyful crew who deserve a podium for hard work and good chat.

The watch's stay the same ..we have had all the white sails up ,,reefing non stop and even had the mid weight kite up for 10 seconds.. we had a lovely 6 hr or so run with gentle swells and VMG of 10 kts. Both watch's working well together when needed in the high winds.
I m buring off the beers and cocktails from Hawaii by being on the bow and all the shop , I'm sure I will slow down soon.It is lovely to see the wonderful stars at night ,We are surley blessed.
It was hard to leave the surf and cocktails of Hawaii, the break was needed and all batteries are full. feeling great..and really enjoying this journey.
Really looking fwd to S.C and seeing my sister Sarah.
Currently yankee 3 up 2 reefs and 30 kts of wind... and very bouncy son not much sleep

Surf...Surf.. Dude

Been in Hawaii for over a week now .. and what a shame....
I have been very luck to have met some locals at the Hawaii Yacht Club who have shown us around the island ..
The guys are legends and introduce us(Neil,Pete,Nicole,Lisa from Liverpool) to the fishing and surfing legends of Hawaii ..
So we went fishing and caught some real big fish ..4 in total and 1 went back ..which i say is good karma ate one on the grill..which was amazing.
Then we hit the surf ..Mark the legend knows Tony the Legend .and before we knew it we all got up first time and were surfing Waikiki .. with that done we were ready for breakfast ..
So we hit Dukes and got introduced the the Legend of all Barmen Jesse.. Mai tai's all round and amazing margarita's ..and we were flying .. we have picked up a little jargon and will be walking the nose tomorrow when we hit the surf again .. when we are ready we will hit the bigger waves on the North shore,do the pipe line and come out the back door..  so hang and relax dude
Photo's to come .  +1808 722 3238 is my contact number in USA

We have been sailing since the end of the race, why?because we are here to sail & we wont sail the pacific evey day and also fuel consumption issues. I thought we would be in by Monday but maybe not.The weather has turned warm & today I find myself in shorts with shirt off for the first time since Singapore.Last night the stars came out in their multitudes & the moon kept them company, but for some reason they didn t shine so bright matching my mood. One has a lot of time to think when the Lady is steady,We are halfway round so on the wayhome. In the safe haven of ones bunk I roleplay different scenarios for when this adventure is over and the next chapter starts, its difficult to imagine,it would be nice to have a close friend to chat to and share these moods, as for job & location i have no answers maybe they will come, i know everything will unfold..it has to.

All good fun a few jokes trying to explain it all to Cal.The stars lit up the event and the wind breathed a heavy breath to spur us on our way. We had fallen to 4th but as of the last sched we are back to 3rd and attacking the helm and trim in deep concentration , cups of tea and of course the now famous Qingdao chat ,the Lady Qing has given us a break from day to day repairs and we are all focused on getting that podium we feel we deserve.New York and HuLL ahead .. the rest of us are all very close and depending on how u mark the line to Hawaii can read anything you want. We are enjoying the challenge, mind you I would rather be 150nm ahead of the fleet and sniffing at a lychee martini and a hot bath
onwards and onwards gjx

I'm with Lisa & Sarah making mud cakes under the trees next to the garage at Birchways, all of a sudden I hear my name being called...I stir not knowing where I am,then it hits me, it's Christian I snap out of my comfort dream back into reality, he's telling me that I should get up something seems wrong..I jump up & together we get bounced towards the hatch, the boat is broaching and with it we hear a bang, we are on deck and see that another Guy has failed (a guy is a rope holding the Spinnaker pole-it's meant to be as steardy as steal)the pole smacks the inner forestay, the kite is twisting, the anti-wrap net in tatters ..this is only the begning.
Next Marcus the magician is up the mast we are all hauling the kite to the deck but it is caught and we are trying to smother it so it doesn't fill & turn into unwanted energy, the helm is fighting to keep the Lady Qing straight..all hands on deck are working well...coms are great and eventually we get the kite down,Marcus down & everything back on track and racing. It has taken us an hour and a half,we now have the yankee 2 up,it has cost a few positons again ..we have now had 3 Guy ropes fail on us,2 down hauls and the kites are testing everyones sewing skills,Nicole wont give up on the repairs and sees to have a mission to fininsh one of them,,, yes them.

It may seem like a lot and it is ,everyone on board is pulling their weight which is great, no hidden stash's of food/drink and everyone respecting the weight rules which is great. We are sailing well just a few hickups at present nd a present in the top three,it may be hard to hold this with our on going repairs but we will never give up.
Seen some wonderful sights sailing around the bottom of Japan on a misty morning as the sun rises and into the Japan current then heaiding into the Pacific,We have had speeds of 24kts and a 12 hour run of 160 nm on our log but HQ had it as 147 nm .. still pretty good eh.. so today is day 9 and another 2900nm miles togo ...how many days wil it take us?
Both watch's workng well and good to see Marcus up on deck for a change.
A couple of goodbyes;Mr Steve Pirate Pang,Vee,Carlo,Kay the shrink, joseph who will be back in santa cruz,Ang,Phil

Its back to moon lit nights joined by the stars coming to keep us company through the chill/bloody cold ,the last two nights have been beautiful up the coast past Shanghai and onwards to Qingdao in the yellow sea.I have never seen so many fishng boats with their lanterns lit up ,it makes it quite difficult navigating around them as they do not have running lights(port/starboard)
However it creates a real romantic setting being in China.
We will enter Qingadoa at 8.30 am local time on Sunday 17th

First we had the heat ,the unbearable heat.. now we have the cold ..-5 and wind chill factor.. we had the calm seas then the high seas now we have the flat seas...we had the lack of wind and then too much wind ..now very little wind..we had huge angry sea with waves pounding now we have a still pond like ripple. This race has been about extremes, emotions high and low ,energy highs and digging deep for more.
Sitting here now feeling safe is a good feeling, just 200miles to go till port.

Oh for a Foyles War episode and a cossy night in with a take away or in the middle of the Bashi Channel with 40kts of wind and the Big sea spewing its massive waves over our bow.Gone are the days of hot weather sailing in shorts,it's full kit and getting ready for the -5 in Qingdao,I have my layers at the ready for the cold & when we get around the top of Taiwan the cold will hit us,I dread to think of the wind chill factor on route.
Things happen in 3's and herethey are so far this trip:
*Chinese lady sailor from Qingdoa has been ill since leaving Singapore, we had to head to Manila just incaswe had to get her off( that may explain our route) ,so our race was a little bit turned upside down. She seemed to get better and is still on the Lady Qing but has yet to go on to the deck , she looks quite positivly green.
*Pirate Steve Pang got stuck up the mast while trying to retrieve a halyard.
*Carlo decided to try his wet suite when he went over the side on the bow,we called a MOB and we had him back on deck within seonds.A drill we had spoken about if it happens and we all did a great job, both watch's were working together.
What next......

Romance and Reality
Reality:Hot Sweaty, hard to sleep, sweating litres when trying to sleep, foul air in the sleeping quaters(in desperate need of fresh air),living on the angle as we have been heeled over from the start beating into the wind, waves breaking over the bow,the bow slamming up and down as the Lady Qing trys to jump her way through, frustrated she can not point as well as others,so like a knight on a chess board we tack our way forward,We are lying 10th..and I/we don't beleive we deserve that -our evolutions have been so slick...and its only day 8 we have at least another 10 to go and haven't even reached the cold. And I can't sit down due to sweat rash. This will get tough, endurance with the living conditions
Romance; on the helm, with yankee3 up,2 reefs in the main,27 nts app wind,no clouds just stars ..it's 11pm and I'm maintining 10.5knts .On the right of me I have the Southern Cross,on the left the North Star, next door the plough(dipper) and to left of the plough Cassiopei.Looking down on me I have my guard of honour Orion.A wave crashes over the deck, the air is fresh on my face,my eyes are wide with anticpiation and alertness,my heart pounds with the shudder,I feel like nothing is going t stop me..YES I feel alive & YES the Romance out weighs the dread of the next 4hrs below.

It's like a game of chess and the pieces are knights,we have to keep tacking into the N.E wind.So the position board is all over the place.Yesterday we were 5th today we are back to 9th.Yesterday we had Nova Scotia,Liverpool,Durban, Glasgow all around us .. today they are in front of us .Jamacia are having a good run 50nm ahead,We are taking our hits East before we make our making tack North.. so as the Lady Qing tacks her way through the South China Sea we wil sea how the game of chess maps out in due course.

The start from Singapore, with light winds the fleet had a hard task over the line, we got caught in a wind hole ,thus our position at the back of the fleet. However the winds picked up and we found ourselves doing sail change ..sail change.. sail change .. which was great , we did some great speeds of these evolutions..and I found myself on the bow being a bow man, at no2,hoisting,trimming and helmng all in the first 36 hours .. great to be back on the ocean. Now we have to havesome lady luck and the lady Qing will try and pick her way through the fleet.
Also we have just opened the hatch to get some air in the sleeping quaters, its been very hot , hotter than coming into bintan..so u can imagine how hard it is tosleep in those conditions.
Great to be back on the ocean away from the hustle of every day life.

Saturday 26/1/08 on Land in Singapore

Sat 26/1/08  on Land in Singapore

Its Saturday night , we leave tomorrow. We have to meet at 7am , another early start when the races starts at 2.30 pm ..why why why
We are ready ,both watch's are the same with the addition of Steve ( who is from Qingdao and owns a bar there) on my watch and Fei who has done some sailing on Chris's.The watch names will stay the same.
I think both watch's did really well last time and we can really build on this, making our evolutions quicker. It will be a tough race with the wind coming from the north/north east which means we will be  heading into it, this will make it tough for us as our Lady Qing doesn't  point as well as other boats. But rest assured the crew is all focused for a podium finish and the Badger (marcus ) is all fired up.
So good bye to Singapore which has been harsh on the liver and the pocket. It was great to see Kevy and Russ in town, and a great surprise to Mr Micky 2names.What a w/e. As for Doug's,Rusty,Stich and everyone else it was great to Catch up and thankyou to Dev for a lovely lunch. Also thanks to Jane and Rusty for putting me up .. Thankyou all.

Some sad news though , Daisy(Carey) isnt joining us from Singapore due to an ear infection. She will be really missed  by all and we hope she can recover to come back and join us ..or at least buy us a cocktail in Santa Cruz.. Hope you get well and keep in touch.

So off to bed for an early night ..and I m sure it will be restless.

Oil rigs set up like a slalom down hill meets us later on as we meander through the energetic iron cities. We gluide on by with good speed of12kts and reaching 14 now and again. Our watch had the had the 8 till mid-night and the 4am to 8am shift with eyes peeled for pirates and lots of shipping in theJava sea we slipped on closer to Batam.

In hinesight we should have stayed on the rhumb line .. but lets not forget this is about sailing, learning and enjoying the adventure .. controlling the frustrtions and keep each other going.. so remember always a positive out there somewhere. ... have a great day where ever you are.

I understand there is a spook email on the blog from africa send NO money..nothing to do with me.. it will be erased once I am on land.
So back to life at sea.. it took a day to get the land out of the veins and it is great to be back at sea..no bills ,no money,no credit cards ,no worries as they say in Oz.
We had a great position over the line however we had to steer to the port at the last minute as nova scotia and singapore clipper were pushed to the port by a ungentlemanly glasgow,I wonder if anythng will be said abouth thisbythe race commitee.
We came out of the harbour and have our own plan , a present we are 9th , but I have a good gut feeling as we are west and hope the winds to come from the west and die as they go east,so with this in mind dividens should pay off in a few days..we wait and see .. at least we have a good game plan.
The 2 teams GaoXing (happy) and Hao Yun(lucky) are both headed by Chris and myself and is an honouras ever..and the teams are ;
Gao Xing Chris,Oscar,Carlo,Cal,kay,Ang,Phil
HoaYun Myself,Christian,Nicole,Ant,Vee,Joseph and steve the pirate

This will be an interesting race as it normally finishes early between Java and Sumatera...as the winds die down and the pirates come out. so we will be on pirate watch and shipping watch... eyes peeled.
